Forget the Mac-Mini, You Need a ChromeBox!

Move over Mac-Mini, there’s a new mini-PC on the market: Introducting the Samsung ChromeBox.

A few days ago a friend of mine returned from Google annual I/O Developers Conference in San Francisco and was telling me about the free goodies he received for participating. Of course he received a Galaxy Nexus cell phone as well as Google brand-new Nexus 7 Tablet (review coming soon), but one of the coolest new products my friend received from Google was the ChromeBox! This mini-computer is the latest in a series of recent collaborations by Samsung and Google to directly compete with Apple, and in this case – the Mac-Mini.

What is the ChromeBox?

Although you may think that the Chromebox can replace a personal computer, it is essentially only a web browser but also runs a series of Google Apps such as Samsung Google ChromeboxCloud and Google Docs. The computer runs entirely on the Chrome operating system, which is designed by Google. The main target market for the ChromeBox is casual users who only need a web browser and do not need a complicated large computer. Take for example a computer in the kitchen. Many people I know have a small computer in the kitchen or dining room for checking recipes, checking email or looking up phone numbers – all things which only require a web browser. So why have a big boxy computer taking up space when you can have the small and very stylish ChromeBox? The box is only 1.3″ tall and 7.6″ wide and weights about 3.3 pounds! It easily connects to any TV or LCD monitor via HDMI or DVI camble and can be tucked away in a drawer, cabinet or mounted under your desk. My friend who showed me his ChromeBox plans to connect it to his Samsung ES8000 LED SmartTV and use it as a media server to stream movies and music to his TV and home theater system. It will also be great for surfing the web on the big screen. Imagine posting updates on Facebook on a 60″ LED TV – awesome!

Samsung Google Chromebox connected to LCD Monitor and KeyboardSetup and installation is simple in 3 easy steps: 1. Plug in power cord. 2. plug box into TV. 3. plug in keyboard and mouse – and you’re ready to go! Oh, and the Samsung Chromebox is fast! It boots up in under 7 seconds and you can browse the web at lighting-fast speeds. This device is all about simplicity and appeals to even the most novice of users. Think your mom or even grandma, who wants to get online to Skype with her grandkids or check her Facebook updates – a Windows 7 PC would be too big, too complicated and frankly much more computer than is needed. So much is done using only a web browser these days and google is cashing in making the web browsing experience easier and available to more users than ever before.

One side note, although the ChromeBox comes with only Google’s Chrome operating system installed, I have read that it is possible to flash the bios on the ChromeBox and then install another operating system such as Windows or Linus, but I do know whats involved in this process. A quick search on online should provide instructions though.

Design and Style

Google Chromebox by Samsung

Style and Samsung go hand-in-hand and the ChromeBox is no different. The sleek black and grey box is very stylish and doesn’t look like a computer. The closest devide you could compare it to would be the Mac-Mini but I even think it looks nicer – and costs way less! It is smaller than many internet routers and fill look fantastic next to your Samsung LED or LCD TV. This a sexy electronic device that appeals to both men and women of all ages and will clutter up the space of your shiny new home theater system, rather it will compliemtn anything you place near it and will be the center of conversation by all who see it.

Where Can You Buy a ChromeBox?

Right now, the Chromebox is only for sale on Google’s website and on Amazon.com through Samsung HERE. It is listed at $329 USD  – which in my opinion is a great price for what you get in the Chromebox. One thing to note however, it does not come with a keyboard or mouse so these will have to be purchased separately. There are tons of wireless keyboard/mouse combos can be found on sites like Amazon.com or at your local electronics store.

Overall this is a great new product from Samsung and Google and I highly reccomend it. There will surely be copycat devices coming out from other companies in the near future but none will be as stylish and powerful as the Google Chromebox.

If you own a ChromeBox or are planning to buy one soon, leave a comment – I’d love to hear your thoughts and review!

Forget the Mac-Mini, You Need a ChromeBox! | The Best New Products Online interesting read. Here is a bit of news that I thought would be of interest: Mozilla’s Firefox Mobile OS to battle an Android monopoly. The corporate chiefs of Apple, Google and Microsoft betting billions of dollars and thousands of highly-paid engineers on their competing mobile operating systems. Despite these high stakes, Mozilla, the non-profit organisation behind the open source Firefox web browser, is planning to take a seat at the table with its own smartphone software.

The design definitely echoes the simplicity and minimalistic look of Google Chrome. I think this device is something to beat in its market.
